Home Automation- A waste of money or not?

I've been thinking about it for awhile, and finally I bought a smart plug. Not a smart light globe that connects to a bridge because I don't know if I can stomach the thought of paying 60 bucks for a light globe, no matter how "smart" it is.

The TP-link HS110 costs $38, and can be used with voice assistants like Google and Alexa. So you can use your smartphone or tablet to control an appliance or light that is plugged into the smart plug, from anywhere in the world.

What are the benefits? Are there any actual useful things you can do with these, or is it just gimmicky and designed to fuel laziness (eg. turning off the lamp without having to get out of bed)?

Check out my video to find out:

I'll take you through the entire process of setting up the smart plug, which I hope will be useful to you guys. The HS110 definitely does work as advertised, but the big question is: will it change your life?

I'd love to hear your comments.

Have fun,

D
